Hurricane-Rated Garage Doors: A Florida Homeowner’s Guide
“Hurricane rated” is a starting point for questions, not enough information to choose a garage door. For a Sarasota-area property, compare the documented door assembly with the requirements for the specific opening.
Call 941-877-0022Wind pressure and impact resistance are different
Design pressure describes the wind loads a door assembly is rated to resist, commonly stated as positive and negative pounds per square foot (PSF). Impact resistance concerns performance against windborne debris. A door can have a wind-pressure rating without the same impact protection, so ask for both details where relevant.
There is no single rating for every home in a city
The required design pressure can vary with building dimensions, roof height, exposure, door size and the location of the opening. Clopay's WindCode calculator uses property-specific inputs and recommends verifying local requirements. A hurricane category or a headline wind speed alone is not a complete specification.
What documentation should you request?
- The manufacturer, exact model and door size.
- The Florida Product Approval or other applicable approval documentation.
- The positive and negative pressure ratings for the selected configuration.
- Whether the door and any glazing meet applicable impact requirements.
- The installation drawings, required reinforcement, hardware and anchoring details.
The Florida Product Approval database separates design pressure and impact information. Read the approval's limits of use and installation documents; an approval number alone does not confirm suitability for every property.
The installation is part of the rating
Clopay's wind-load drawings include door sections, horizontal reinforcement, hardware, track and attachment requirements. The building's supporting structure must also be appropriate. Ask the installer and local building department about permits and the documentation needed for your opening.
Can you upgrade an existing door with struts?
Only a documented reinforcement system can support a claim about a particular assembly's wind performance. Adding generic braces does not establish an approved rating. See our garage door strut guide before deciding whether repair, a documented retrofit or replacement is appropriate.
Bring these questions to your quote
Ask what requirement the proposed door is intended to meet, which approved configuration will be installed, and what documentation you will receive. Uplift can discuss door service and replacement options; property-specific code and structural requirements should be confirmed with the relevant building authority or qualified design professional.
