Garage Door Struts: Reinforcement, Sagging and Wind Ratings

A strut is a reinforcing member used across a garage door section. The correct reinforcement depends on the door design; a damaged or sagging section needs diagnosis before hardware is added.

A reinforcing strut spans the door section. Look at the long reinforcing member across the top section below the opener rail. The rail leads back to the motor; the reinforcement stays with the door panel. This example does not demonstrate a hurricane rating or an approved retrofit. What reinforcement is intended to do

DASMA explains that manufacturers commonly specify horizontal reinforcement, including struts, for wind-load-rated doors. Reinforcement is part of a larger system involving sections, hardware and the connection to the building. It is not a separate guarantee of hurricane performance.

Why adding a strut needs an assessment

Ask whether the door is structurally sound, whether the proposed reinforcement is supported by the manufacturer, and whether changing the assembly requires an adjustment to the counterbalance system. A brace should not conceal an unresolved failure in a section or its attachment.

Questions to ask about a bowed or sagging door

  • What caused the section to deform?
  • Can the existing section be safely retained?
  • Which reinforcement is specified for this model and size?
  • What checks will confirm normal balance and operation after the work?

Does a strut make a door hurricane rated?

Adding an unspecified brace does not establish an approved wind rating. DASMA's reinforcement guidance calls for systems based on engineering and manufacturer recommendations. Request the documentation for the complete assembly, including any reinforcement required for its stated pressure rating.

Before your service visit

From a safe distance, photograph the affected section and the model label. Explain whether the door moves unevenly, binds or has been damaged. Stop using a visibly unsafe door. Read our wind-rating guide when storm performance is part of the decision.
