Garage Door Opener Problems: What to Check and When to Call

A door that will not open or close does not always need a new opener. The problem may involve the remote, power, safety sensors or the door system itself.

The opener moves the door through its rail and arm. The motor is at the upper right, connected by the rail to the curved door arm. The springs provide the door's counterbalance. Start with simple observations

Check whether the wall control and remote behave differently, whether the opener has power, and whether an object blocks the doorway or the sensor path. Record any flashing lights or error codes. Follow the manual for your exact opener rather than applying a reset sequence for another model.

When the door will not close

LiftMaster lists misaligned safety sensors and a blocked door path among common causes of opener trouble. Look for obvious obstructions without standing beneath the door. Do not bypass the sensors or increase force settings to make an unsafe door move. If the problem persists, arrange a professional diagnosis.

When the motor runs but the door does not move

A spring or track problem can affect operation even when the opener has power. If the door is uneven, appears damaged or stops after moving a short distance, stop repeated attempts. Tell the technician what moved, what noise you heard and whether the problem began suddenly.

Repair or replace the opener?

Ask whether the fault is in the opener or the door, whether parts are available and whether a repair will restore safe operation. If replacement is appropriate, compare the proposed drive type, noise level, battery backup and smart features with your actual needs. Confirm compatibility with your door before selecting a unit.

Useful details for your call

Have the opener brand and model, approximate age, error code and symptoms ready. Say whether the door is stuck open or closed. If you suspect spring damage, see our spring warning-sign guide and keep clear until the door can be assessed.
