Garage Door Springs: Warning Signs and Repair Decisions

A garage door that suddenly feels heavy or stops opening may have a spring problem. The spring system helps counterbalance the door; the opener does not replace that support.

Torsion springs, cable drums and lift cables. The coiled springs counterbalance the door. The round drums wind the lift cables, which connect to the door. These components work together and must match the door’s weight and hardware.

Signs that deserve a service call

A loud bang, a visible separation in a torsion spring, a door that lifts only a few inches, or uneven movement can point to a spring-system failure. These symptoms can also involve cables, tracks or other hardware. Stop using the opener when the door will not move normally.

Keep clear of the door. Do not loosen spring hardware, bottom brackets or cables, and do not try to lift a door with a suspected broken spring. Spring systems store substantial tension. DASMA recommends trained technicians for this work.

Torsion and extension springs

Torsion springs typically sit above the opening on a shaft. Extension springs usually run beside the horizontal tracks. The replacement must suit the door and its hardware. A photo taken from a safe distance and the door's model label can help a technician identify the system before a visit.

How springs differ from an opener

Springs support the weight of the door. The opener moves a properly balanced door. A stronger opener does not correct a broken spring or an unbalanced door. If the opener strains or the door becomes unusually heavy, stop using it and arrange an inspection.

What to discuss before replacement

Ask which spring specification is appropriate, whether the door has one or two springs, what the quoted work includes, and how the technician will check door balance and operation afterward. For a two-spring system, DASMA recommends replacing both springs when one fails.

What affects the quote?

The spring system, door configuration, access and related worn components affect the scope. Describe whether the door is open or closed, whether vehicles are trapped and when the problem started. Request a written explanation of the proposed repair rather than choosing on a starting price alone.
